Most AI-generated ad copy is terrible because the prompts that generate it are terrible. Here is the exact prompt structure that produces ad copy worth testing. Not theoretical. This is what I use to generate ai prompts for ad copy that converts.
The Prompt Structure
You are an expert direct response copywriter. You write ad copy for [industry/niche].
TARGET AUDIENCE:
- Who they are: [specific demographic and psychographic details]
- Their biggest pain point: [specific problem in their words]
- Their dream outcome: [what they want, stated as they would say it]
- Their awareness level: [problem-aware / solution-aware / product-aware]
THE OFFER:
- What we are selling: [specific product or service]
- The mechanism: [how it works, briefly]
- Key proof point: [one specific result with numbers]
WRITE:
- 5 primary text variations (Facebook ad body copy)
- Each under 125 words
- Each using a different hook angle: pain, dream outcome, social proof, curiosity, contrarian
- Tone: conversational, grade 6 reading level, uses contractions
- Include one specific number or statistic in each
- End each with a clear CTA that matches this landing page headline: [exact headline]
DO NOT:
- Use corporate jargon or marketing speak
- Start with a question (overused)
- Use the word "imagine"
- Use em dashes
- Write anything you could not say out loud in a normal conversation
Why This Works
The prompt constrains the AI in all the right places. It specifies the audience (so the copy resonates), the awareness level (so the messaging matches where they are), the format (so the output is usable), and the restrictions (so it avoids the common AI writing traps).
Adapting the Prompt
Change the hook angles based on what you are testing. Swap "contrarian" for "urgency" or "mechanism" depending on your test plan.
Adjust the word count based on placement. 125 words for Facebook feed. 40 words for headlines. 250 words for long-form ads.
The Critical Step
Never run AI-generated copy without editing it first. The prompt produces a strong first draft. You add the human elements: specific details, authentic voice, and the nuances that make copy feel real instead of generated.
AI writes the skeleton. You add the soul.
Testing the Output
Generate 5 variations. Read each one out loud. The one that sounds like something a real person would say in conversation is the keeper. The ones that sound written or polished or corporate get discarded.
Then test in your ad platform. Run all 5 variations with equal budget for 72 hours. Kill the bottom 2. Let the top 3 run for another week. The winner becomes your new control.
