The Tree of Thought Approach
Jay Banlasan
The AI Systems Guy
tl;dr
When one reasoning path is not enough, the tree of thought approach explores multiple paths simultaneously.
Linear reasoning follows one path. If that path is wrong, you get a wrong answer confidently delivered. The tree of thought approach ai technique explores multiple paths and picks the best one.
More paths explored means better decisions. Simple as that.
How It Works
Instead of "solve this problem," you prompt: "Generate three different approaches to solving this problem. For each approach, reason through the first two steps. Then evaluate which approach is most promising and continue with that one."
The AI explores multiple branches before committing. This prevents the common failure of going deep on the first idea, which might not be the best idea.
When to Use It
Complex decisions with multiple valid approaches. Pricing strategy, market positioning, campaign structure, architecture decisions. Any time there is more than one reasonable path forward.
Do not use it for simple questions. "What is our CPA?" has one answer. "How should we restructure our ad account?" has many possible answers. The second benefits from tree-of-thought.
The Three-Path Pattern
Three paths is the sweet spot. Two does not give enough variety. Five takes too long and usually collapses into similar options anyway.
"Propose three different approaches to [problem]. For each:
- Describe the approach in one sentence
- List the key assumptions
- Identify the biggest risk
- Estimate the likelihood of success Then select the best approach and explain why."
Combining With Other Techniques
Tree-of-thought stacks well with the step-back technique. First, step back to identify what factors matter. Then explore three paths that weight those factors differently.
It also combines with persona-based prompting. "Explore three approaches: one optimized for revenue, one optimized for risk reduction, one optimized for speed of execution." Each path has a different priority.
Practical Example
"We need to increase leads by 30% in 60 days without increasing budget. Generate three strategies, reason through the first steps of each, and recommend one."
Path 1 might focus on conversion rate optimization. Path 2 on creative testing. Path 3 on audience expansion. The model evaluates each based on your specific data and picks the one with the highest probability of hitting 30%.
That analysis, done manually, takes hours of debate. With tree-of-thought, you get the structured comparison in minutes.
