How to Use AI for Packaging and Label Copy

tl;dr
Generate compelling product packaging copy that fits tight character limits and meets regulatory requirements.
Packaging copy is one of the hardest writing jobs in marketing. You have maybe 15 words on the front of a box to convince someone to pick it up. Every character counts in ways that blog posts and emails never face.
AI packaging label copy generation helps you explore dozens of variations fast so you find the one that fits the space and sells the product.
Why Packaging Copy Is Different
Three constraints make it unique.
Space. You are writing for a physical surface. A 2x3 inch label does not care how good your headline is if it does not fit. Character limits are brutal and non-negotiable.
Regulations. Depending on your industry, certain claims require specific language. Food labels have FDA requirements. Supplements have disclaimers. Cosmetics have banned words. AI does not know your specific regulatory environment, so you need to review every word.
Shelf competition. Your product sits next to 20 others. The copy needs to differentiate in a glance. Not a read. A glance.
Using AI for Packaging Variations
Start with the constraints. Tell Claude exactly what you are working with:
"I have a [product type] label with space for a 6-word headline, a 15-word description, and 3 bullet points of 8 words each. The product's key benefit is [benefit]. Our brand voice is [voice]. Generate 10 variations."
The specificity of the constraints is what makes AI useful here. It can generate 10 options that all fit the exact space you have in seconds. Without AI, a copywriter might produce three options in an hour.
The Review Process
Never put AI copy directly on packaging. Run every variation through three filters:
First, regulatory. Does any word make a claim you cannot substantiate? "Clinically proven" means nothing without a clinical trial. "Helps support" is usually safer than "cures" or "fixes."
Second, brand. Does it sound like your brand or like every other product on the shelf? Generic copy blends in. You need to stand out.
Third, readability. Print it at actual size. Can you read it from arm's length? Does the font size work with the word count? A beautiful headline that requires squinting is a failure.
Beyond the Label
Use the same approach for box copy, insert cards, hang tags, and pouch backs. Each surface has its own constraints and its own job. The front sells. The back reassures. The insert builds loyalty.
Give AI the surface dimensions, the word limits, and the job. It gives you options. You pick the winner.
