Prompt: Create Email Subject Line Variations

The AI Systems Guy

tl;dr

Generate dozens of subject line options across different psychological triggers for A/B testing.

Subject lines determine whether your email gets opened or ignored. Yet most people write one, maybe two options and call it done. That is not testing. That is guessing.

This prompt generates subject line variations across different psychological angles so you can actually A/B test with meaningful differences. Use it to create prompt email subject line variations that cover real strategic ground.

The Prompt

Generate 20 email subject line variations for the following email:

EMAIL PURPOSE: [e.g., "Announce a new service offering to existing clients"]
TARGET AUDIENCE: [e.g., "Business owners doing $1M-$5M revenue who already use our consulting services"]
KEY BENEFIT: [e.g., "Save 10 hours per week on reporting"]
TONE: [e.g., "Professional but not corporate. Conversational."]

Create variations across these categories (at least 2 per category):

1. CURIOSITY: Open a loop the reader needs to close
2. BENEFIT-DRIVEN: Lead with the specific outcome
3. FEAR/URGENCY: What they lose by not opening
4. SOCIAL PROOF: Reference results others have gotten
5. QUESTION: Ask something they want the answer to
6. PERSONALIZATION: Include [First Name] or reference their situation
7. CONTRARIAN: Challenge something they believe
8. DIRECT: State exactly what the email is about, no tricks

For each subject line, note:
- Which category it falls under
- Estimated character count
- Preview text suggestion (the line that shows after the subject in inbox)

Keep all subject lines under 50 characters. No clickbait. No ALL CAPS. No excessive punctuation.

Why Categories Matter

Most A/B tests compare two similar subject lines. "Save time on reports" vs "Save hours on reporting." That tells you nothing because the angle is identical.

Testing across categories tells you what your audience responds to. Do they click on curiosity or social proof? Direct statements or questions? Once you know their trigger, every future email performs better.

Running the Test

Pick your top two from different categories. Send each to 15-20% of your list. After 2-4 hours, send the winner to the rest.

Over five to ten emails, you will have clear data on which psychological trigger your audience prefers. That pattern is worth more than any single subject line.

Quick Variations for Common Emails

Follow up after this prompt with: "Now give me 5 subject lines specifically for [type] emails using the winning category." Build a swipe file organized by email type and angle. After a few months, you will never stare at a blank subject line field again.
