Prompt: Generate Brand Voice Guidelines
Jay Banlasan
The AI Systems Guy
tl;dr
Create comprehensive brand voice guidelines from examples of your existing communication.
This prompt brand voice guidelines output gives you a documented voice standard that keeps every piece of communication consistent, whether you write it or someone else does.
Most businesses have an instinctive voice but no documentation. That works until you hire someone or use AI to write on your behalf. Then you need the rules written down.
The Prompt
You are a brand strategist specializing in voice and tone. Create brand voice guidelines from the following examples of my communication.
EXAMPLE 1 (type: [email/social post/website copy]):
[Paste a piece of your writing you are happy with]
EXAMPLE 2 (type: [email/social post/website copy]):
[Paste another example]
EXAMPLE 3 (type: [email/social post/website copy]):
[Paste a third example]
My business: [what you do]
My audience: [who you talk to]
What I never want to sound like: [e.g., corporate, salesy, academic, casual, preachy]
From these examples, create brand voice guidelines covering:
1. VOICE ATTRIBUTES (pick 4-5):
For each attribute, provide:
- The attribute name (e.g., "Direct", "Confident", "Honest")
- What it means in practice with an example
- What it does NOT mean (the boundary)
- A "this, not that" example: a sentence written correctly vs incorrectly
2. TONE VARIATIONS:
How the voice shifts across contexts:
- Social media tone
- Email to clients tone
- Sales/marketing tone
- Support/problem resolution tone
The voice stays the same. The tone adjusts.
3. LANGUAGE RULES:
- Words and phrases to always use
- Words and phrases to never use
- Sentence length preference
- Paragraph length preference
- Reading level target
4. FORMATTING RULES:
- Capitalization style
- Punctuation preferences
- Emoji usage (yes/no/when)
- How to handle technical terms
5. THE ACID TEST:
3 questions someone can ask about any piece of content to check if it matches the voice.
Keep the guidelines under 2 pages. If people will not read it, it will not get used.
Why Three Examples Work
Three examples give AI enough patterns to identify your voice without giving so much data that the analysis becomes generic. Pick examples from different contexts (email, social, website) for the best coverage.
Using the Output
Every content creator, copywriter, or AI prompt should reference these guidelines. Include them in your AI system prompts when generating content. They turn generic AI output into output that sounds like you.
