Why Static Prompts Waste Resources

If your prompt always asks for a 500-word analysis regardless of input complexity, you are overspending on simple inputs and possibly underspending on complex ones.

A lead that consists of just a name and email does not need the same scoring depth as a lead that includes company details, LinkedIn profile, and engagement history.

The Routing Logic

Before sending input to AI, evaluate it. How long is it? How many data points does it contain? What type of content is it? Use these signals to select the appropriate prompt version.

Short, simple input routes to a lightweight prompt with a fast model. Complex, detailed input routes to a thorough prompt with a capable model.

This can be as simple as an if/else on input length. Under 100 words? Use the quick prompt. Over 100 words? Use the detailed prompt. Over 500 words? Use the comprehensive prompt with the premium model.

Building Adaptive Prompts

Create three versions of each prompt: lightweight, standard, and comprehensive. The lightweight version handles the 70% of inputs that are simple. The standard version handles the 25% that need more analysis. The comprehensive version handles the 5% that are complex.

This 70/25/5 split means most of your traffic hits the cheapest processing tier. Your cost per input drops significantly while your quality on complex inputs stays high.

Dynamic Context Selection

The adaptive pattern extends to context. For a simple question, include minimal context. For a complex question, pull in relevant history, related documents, and background information.

This keeps your token usage proportional to the task complexity. Simple tasks use 500 tokens total. Complex tasks might use 10,000. But you only pay for what the task actually needs.

Measuring Adaptation

Track quality scores by input complexity tier. If your lightweight prompt produces poor results on inputs it considers "simple," your routing threshold is wrong. Adjust until each tier delivers appropriate quality for its input type.
