The Knowledge Distillation Pattern

tl;dr

Extracting key knowledge from large documents into concise, actionable summaries. Distillation at scale.

The knowledge distillation pattern ai teams use compresses large volumes of information into concentrated, actionable knowledge. Not summarization. Distillation. The difference matters.

A summary shortens a document. Distillation extracts the principles, patterns, and actionable insights while discarding the noise.

Summary vs Distillation

A summary of a 100-page report gives you a 5-page version. Distillation gives you the 10 decisions the report supports and the evidence behind each one.

Summaries preserve structure. Distillation reorganizes around utility. What can someone do with this knowledge? That question drives the output format.

The Process

Step one: feed the source material to AI with instructions to extract principles, not paragraphs. "What are the key decisions this document supports? What evidence backs each decision? What would change if the data were different?"

Step two: organize by action. Group the extracted knowledge by what someone would do with it. All knowledge related to pricing goes together. All knowledge related to audience targeting goes together. The original document structure is irrelevant.

Step three: add context markers. For each piece of distilled knowledge, note: where it came from, how confident the evidence is, and when it might expire. Knowledge without context is trivia.

Where to Apply This

Meeting transcripts. A one-hour meeting contains maybe 5 minutes of actionable content. Distillation extracts the decisions, action items, and key insights. The rest is filler.

Industry reports. A 50-page market report has 3 pages that affect your business. Distillation finds those 3 pages and presents them as decisions you need to make.

Competitive research. Dozens of competitor pages, reviews, and press releases distilled into: what they are doing well, where they are weak, and what opportunity that creates for you.

Building a Knowledge Base Through Distillation

Every document that enters your business gets distilled. The distilled output goes into a searchable knowledge base. Over time, you build a concentrated repository of everything your business has learned.

That repository is worth more than the original documents. It is knowledge indexed by action, not by source. When you need to make a decision, you search by what you need to do, and the relevant knowledge surfaces.
