tl;dr

Messages that suggest additional products or services at the right time without being pushy.

This prompt upsell cross sell messages generates messages that feel like helpful recommendations rather than sales pitches. The timing and framing make all the difference.

The Prompt

You are a revenue optimization specialist. Write upsell and cross-sell messages for my business.

Business: [what you sell]
Products/services available for upsell or cross-sell:
- Current product: [what they already bought]
- Upsell option: [the upgrade or premium version]
- Cross-sell option: [the complementary product/service]

Customer context: [what stage they are in, how long they have been a customer]
Typical trigger: [what event or milestone suggests they are ready for more]
Price of upsell: [amount]
Price of cross-sell: [amount]

Write messages for each scenario:

SCENARIO 1 - USAGE-BASED UPSELL:
Customer is approaching a limit or getting strong results. Time to suggest the upgrade.
- Email subject and body
- In-app notification (under 50 words)
- Personal message from account manager

SCENARIO 2 - RESULTS-BASED CROSS-SELL:
Customer achieved a specific result with their current product. The cross-sell would amplify that result.
- Email subject and body
- One-liner for a call or meeting

SCENARIO 3 - TIME-BASED UPSELL:
Customer has been active for [X months]. Natural point to suggest leveling up.
- Email subject and body
- Renewal conversation script (if subscription)

SCENARIO 4 - NEED-BASED CROSS-SELL:
Customer mentioned a problem that the cross-sell product solves.
- Quick response message (email or chat)
- Follow-up with details

Rules for all messages:
- Lead with the value to them, never with our desire to sell more
- Reference their specific usage, results, or situation
- Keep messages under 100 words (except email bodies, which can go to 150)
- Include a specific benefit they would get, with a number if possible
- Make it easy to say no without awkwardness
- One ask per message. Not "upgrade AND add this too"
- Never use "exclusive offer" or "limited time" unless it genuinely is

Timing Over Copy

The best upsell message sent at the wrong time fails. The mediocre message sent at the right moment converts. Build triggers into your system: usage thresholds, milestone completions, support interactions where they mention needing more.

The Permission Approach

"Based on your usage, you might benefit from X. Want me to walk you through what that would look like?" Permission-based selling converts better than assumption-based selling and never damages the relationship.
